Science: Copper Coin experiment

In science, we are doing an experiment using a coin. The two changes that should be seen is the copper turns a silver then gold. these metals combine together to create brass.
Instructions
- Clean coin in salt+vinggar solution
- put 50ml of molL+ NaOH into a beaker
- heat bunsen burner until nearly boiling - stair as heating then take off heat
- add a spatula of zinc powder
- heat lightly for 3 min, with a coin in - stir as heating
- take the coin out with tongs
- rinse coin under water to remove chunks of zinc.
- wave coin in the blue flame using tongs.
Equation:

zinc + sodium hydroxide = zinc hydroxide
Observation: the coin changed to a silver colour when it was put into the beaker that contained sodium hydroxide and zinc powder. after they were rinsed in water the were put under the flame as they turned into a gold colour.
