Science: Gods of Natural Disasters

 - Research a myth/legend/god(dess) that was used to explain a natural disaster/event.

= Ho-musubi

What is his story?

= Ho-musubi also known as Kagu-tsuchi or Hi-no kami in the Shinto religion of Japan, known as a God of Fire. his mother Izanami the female creator was fatally burned when giving birth to him; and his father Izanagi cut him into pieces creating serval new gods.

During the hi-matsuri known as Fire festivals which is held a the beginning of the new year, worshippers carry back to their home hearths torches lit from the new fire started by the temple priest

What had the people observed and used to explain what was happening?

The fire god is revered as a purificatory agent as much as out of fear for his destructiveness. all fire-related events are caused by his destructiveness.

How does this match up to what is actually happening? connect to the scientific explanation.

=  such a destructive force as a fire in a culture where buildings were typically made out of wood and paper resulted in Kagutsuchi becoming an important object of Shinto rutial and a frequent receiver appeasing offerings. Don't leave fire around wood or paper unwatched it will catch on fire.

An Inspector Calls

What were the major events between 1910-1920?

First Auto Electric Start, The First Electric Self Start was installed in a Cadillac By GM. Up until this time, all cars needed to be started by cranking a starting handle which was hard work and caused multiple minor injuries when the car backfired during the starting process.

Madame Butterfly, Puccini's opera 'Madame Butterfly' which tells the story of an American sailor, B.F. Pinkerton, who marries and abandons a young Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio-San, or Madame Butterfly had its world premiere at La Scala in Milan, Italy.

Sinking of the Titanic, The Titanic sets sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The Titanic had been described as the world's most luxurious floating hotel which is unsinkable, and was only 5 days out when she hit an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic with the loss of many lives. The Titanic was built in Belfast (between 1909 and 1911) and registered in Liverpool in 1912. Liverpool was the home port, although she never entered it.

Who was J.B. priestly, and what did he do in his life?

Priestley was a prolific and industrious writer at the time. He published 39 plays and 26 novels as well as volumes of essays and criticism and continued to write into his old age. He died on 14 August 1984. Further information about the life of J P Priestley can be found via the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

What are the symbols and motifs in narratives?

If something is mentioned once to allude to something else, it's called a symbol. If something is mentioned several times throughout a story, it's a motif. Think of symbols as baby motifs. They only grow up to become motifs if they're repeated throughout the course of a narrative.

What was life like in England in the 1910s?

DTE: The Celiac & Gluten solution

In DTE, I have changed from the sphere coding project and joined with Emily Helping out with her project. we have been tasked by our mentor with many things. This is a concept for when you load up the app that I had come up with whilst my team member was absent. With the advice and notes, I had taken down from the mentor helping us out in this project. I hadn't gotten that far and hadn't followed all her notes accurately so not at the best it could be.

P.E Gymnastics

In P.E we did gymnastics, our task was to learn something new, or something you have mastered I did walking across the beam, I have kind of improved or the opposite I suppose. we were to take either take of video or a picture of our effort and to post it to our blogs as proof we have done so.

Science: Hazard Research - Volcanoes

Volcanoes created more than 80 percent of the earth's surface, laying that foundation that allowed life to thrive. their explosives forces crafted mountains as well as craters. lava rivers into the bleak landscapes of earth. but as time flies by, the elements break down these volcanic rocks, liberating nutrients from their stone prisons and creating fascinating fertile soils that had allowed civilization to burst into existence. volcanoes are located everywhere, even in the Antarctic one of the coldest places on earth. some of the 1,500 volcanoes are still considered potentially active around the whole world today.

Most of the majority of the volcanoes in the world form along the boundaries of the planet's tectonic plates. tectonic plates are massive expanses of earth lithosphere which constantly shifts, as the plates bump into each other. when the tectonic plates collide, one often sinks deep below which is also known as the subduction zone. magma is formed by the descending landmass sinking while the pressure and temperatures climb, releasing water from rocks. The water slightly reduces the melting point of the overlying rocks, this forms magma. As magma climbs its way to the surface, the spark of life to reawaken a slumbering volcano.

The are two types of volcanoes are split into different groups, by eruption type and their volcanic shape.  there are there basic cone shapes. Cinder cones, shield cones, and composite also know as stratovolcanoes

SOST: The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

In SOST, we have been given the option to research on a treaty of our choice about which treaty we would like to find information on. I had chosen the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, I have come up with a small slide show showing the treaties negatives for some of the signers and the positives for them. this slideshow will present some information about this treaty.

Art: Dilution Paintings

Over the few weeks in art, we have been slowly working through our dilution paintings on a white bit of paper/card that had been painted over using black gesso. The way we painted these were by diluting white paint with water to make more faded/darker tones that are shown in the image we had chosen to paint. as for the lighter tones we built up the white paint in layers making it light and more accurate to the image. here is the result of this week.

DTE: Sphero project: Ideas and Methods

Idea One (first initial idea)

Sphero Robs you

In DTE, I've begun planning out what the Sphero could do and I've come up with an idea or scenario where the Sphero robs you (kind of) it asking you for money as every time it speaks the Sphero will light up. And if you don't give the Sphero the money in the time it will play a gunshot sound and steal your money that way (and the sphere would be holding a mini model gun). If you do give the Sphero the money it will thank you and run in the opposite direction. The way it would steal your money is by making contact with you (shaking and placing it back down or waving your hand in front of it). (like how people pay you money with pay-wave. (as a joke))

Equipment that might be needed: Paper, cardboard, pencils, pens. Well-charged Sphero, and device to connect it to (w/Bluetooth).

Idea Two (suggested by teacher because my idea is too dark)

Sphero needs attention

This idea is kind of more family-friendly of sorts? Where you have Sphero needing attention like shaking him (violently). if you don't complete the task it will take a Sphero point away from you(it will play a negative sound of how many times you lose a point). Take Sphero on a spin as one of the tasks you have to get Sphero to preform to regain (5 points as it will play a sound five times.) The more you play the more difficult it becomes and more likely to lose points. I am not completely sure how to keep track of how many points you can get yet. but there will be a selected amount of time to get so many points as possible. for now, to know how many points you have is to keep track on paper or in your head.

Equipment that might be needed: Paper, cardboard, pencils, pens. Well-charged Sphero, and device to connect it to (w/Bluetooth).

Here's one of the past programs/w the code blocks I have used:

(The One the right is the original version from the tutorial, the one the right is the one from the tutorial video as the other one on the left is the version I edited and shortened with the help of the teacher.)

I've have decided which idea to follow through with I have chosen the second idea due to the first one would of be using that much code as the first one and I already have an initial idea for it. I've nearly come to the end of my progress I'm finally going to create the code for the second idea. Here's the made-up flier for the sphero. As it explains what you can do using this code, (if it works).

I've attempted to create the code but I have strong beliefs that It wouldn't work. due to me leaving not enough time to start and finish it so I only got it half-finished and kind of not bothered to finish it anyways.

Science Wind racers

In science, we had been working on our wind racers, we were able to work in groups in 2-4. We had worked together on our wind racer for four periods and tested it out many times.  next time I think we should not have modified the sails, since on one of the final tests it didn't go as far. This will link to Tia's blog where she has kept track of our six-day progress.

Art: Stencil

For the past couple of weeks in Art, we started to make our very own stencils of our choice. I decided to not use a reference online of an already existing stencil and decided to create my own one. It took a bit to finish it due to taking a bit to draw all the bits and sections that I needed to cut out. This is the image I used for a reference for the stencil. (The stencil isn't the best lt could've been.) after I had finished the stencil I had tested it out on two bits of paper the first time I used it on a grey brick background it didn't look the best. because I had rushed it. the second time I used it I did it on black painted paper with a gradient it didn't look too good because I had a bit too much paint. I was too eager to start on the actual thing.

Overall I believe the final product turned out well. The background to others and even for me, it had the vibes/looks of a paranormal video of sorts. Due to that idea, I had added the video frame and REC button to it. I'm not that happy with the frame due to me not painting in a straight line. But the stencil did turn out pretty well on the pit of paper. I know I can do better next time and try to put more effort into it and take more time to paint. (instead of rushing to finish for no reason.)

SOST: Technology and change Essay

Use the Lawyer paragraph to explain this.

Paragraph 1: Introduction.

Re-state what the question is in a paragraph

Many years ago the ancient Egyptians created some of the many modern inventions we use today. This includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, scissors, calendars, clocks, paper and many more. This essay will show some information about some of these inventions and how they have changed throughout time.

Paragraph 2: Invention 1 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

An important invention during the Ancient Egypt time were the medical tools. Ancient Egypt medical tools were made of wood and metals that were used in surgery and medical treatment; these significant tools were made in 4000 BC. Since then our technology has changed into shiny metal tools of many types and many syringes and medicines that can help with many things nowadays. These tools are important because if they didn't exist at all we would have no way to treat or give medicine(They are even starting to make robots to do tricky surgerys now.)

Paragraph 3: Invention 2 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

A really important invention created during the ancient epyptian era is paper The first ever type of paper in the world was made by the Egyptians using the papyrus plant in 3000 BC.  Paper is used to keep track of important things and to keep updated on things that happen. Nowadays we make paper out of a certain type of tree suitable to be turned into it. You can't have paper without scissors of course.  Ancient Egyptians created the first ever scissors created in 1500 BC. They were used for cutting hair and for aiding in fashion. They were later adapted into the modern day scissors much smaller than the ancient ones and more easier to use.

Paragraph 4: Invention 3 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

A significant invention invented during this time is the calendar. The egyptian civil calendar, which included 365 days, was founded in 2510 BC. In our time we now use a calendar that consists of twelve months and the 365 days printed in a book-like format out of paper.  Calendars are used to keep track on what day of the year it is. (Mainly we use calendars on phones, laptops and many other devices.) This invention is significant because we wouldn't have any way to tell what day it is or even year.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

Go over the points you have just made above

If we didn't have these inventions including: toothbrushes, mints calendars, and clocks. We would have eventually invented them. But if we hadn't, life would be pretty different in the modern age. So If we didn't we would have had a terrible sense of time and dates and our even our own hygiene.

Science: Car speed experiment

Yesterday in science we have been learning how to calculate the speed from d/t. we used this to find out the speed of the cars on carmen road using seconds them from that converting them into kilometers.

How did we do the experiment?
We worked either pair or groups of four to help record the speed using a stopwatch between the distance of two lamposts, (51m) of up to 10 cars, and compare their speeds to finds out if they were speeding or not.

What did we find out?
we found out from the investigation that all of the cars were either doing the speed limit and below. the fastest car had gone 49. 18 km hr-1.  The average time of the cars going past the first post to the second one was 4.24s.

A way to improve the results is to either put lines across the road where the lampposts are or, to stand further away from in-between the two posts so you can get a better view on where the car passes past the first post to the other one.

Some things that could've impacted the speed of the cars are us standing at the fence holding stopwatches timing them. Another impact is the traffic lights ahead at the intersection, this had of most likely impacted their speed causing them to slow down.

Art: Street Art Tonal drawing

In Art, we chose from a heap of different street art to draw and I chose this skull. I did the drawing using a B pencil. and the shading consists of many lines and smudging of the pencil lines. I tried to get it as accurate as I could. (This is only in penicil so it won't look alike colorwise.)

SOST: Careers Inquiry.

In social studies, we have been learning about different careers. we were then to research a career that is of interest to me. I chose to research Crop workers. I found this interesting because plants are cool. here is some of the information I've found out.

Introduction to DTE

In DTE's introductory part we were given the task to search up the design process online and to chose from a couple of designs to get some inspirations from it this is what I've come up with. here the three designs that inspired me. and the design that I had come up with.

One of the Inspirations:

In DTE this week, we created an infographic about ergonomics using one of the following programs: Piktochart, Canva, Venngage. For this infographic, I used piktochart and using some of the already of the existing infographics online as a reference to give me some of the information and Ideas. Here is my simple plain infographic I came up with that no longer than 5-10 minutes.

Here is the infographic I used as I reference of design and some of the information I got.

Critical reflection: Overall I think the introductory section was pretty easy to understand and pretty straight forward and easy.

What is a circuit?

What is a circuit? A circuit is path electricity flows along. it starts at a battery and flows through a copper wire to a light bulb or other object as it would flow through the other side of the battery/power source. the difference between series and parallel is the flow of electricity. as in a parallel circuit the electricity only goes on the way but in a series circuit, the electricity splits ups and passes the multiple points instead of one.

Show parallel + series circuit with 2 batteries 2 bulbs and a switch.

What is voltage? how does it differ in series vs parallel? a voltage is the pressure of an electrical circuit's power source that pushes the charged electrons through a current.

What is current? how does it vary in series and parallel? Current is the rate of the flow of an electric charge passing a point or region.

Art: Street Art

in art were researching and choosing a piece of street art that is located in Christchurch, and writing down something about it at what is resembles in your mind. The one I chose located near Battersea street and Colombo street, circled in the map below.

The art looks like it rocking out to some pretty good music and he's screaming out. and the rocking power is seeping into reality as the vibrant cool colour complement this piece of art. the other reason why I chose this one because I like the colours. The streaming of whites and blues from his eyes and the blue light beaming from his mouth it looks like he's attacking someone or trying to escape.

The second piece I chose is an intriguing one to me that relates to japan and the reds and the pinks stand out to me the most on the white background with the samurai of some sort standing in the middle with carrying his sword and hilt. I like how the character/person standing there is in black in white it makes the colours in the background to be seen in a different light of some sort. (I don't know how to explain it properly.)

Lastly is this interesting piece with a whole variety of colours, of many black thick lines going all over the place. it takes a while to figure out what you're looking out with all the many different things that are included in the image. the pinks, blues, oranges, yellows just seem all over the place.  I took awhile admiring how much detail was put into it.

SOST: How had tech change the way we do things?

Science: Copper Coin experiment

In science, we are doing an experiment using a coin. The two changes that should be seen is the copper turns a silver then gold. these metals combine together to create brass.
Instructions
- Clean coin in salt+vinggar solution
- put 50ml of molL+ NaOH into a beaker
- heat bunsen burner until nearly boiling - stair as heating then take off heat
- add a spatula of zinc powder
- heat lightly for 3 min, with a coin in - stir as heating
- take the coin out with tongs
- rinse coin under water to remove chunks of zinc.
- wave coin in the blue flame using tongs.
Equation:

zinc + sodium hydroxide = zinc hydroxide
Observation: the coin changed to a silver colour when it was put into the beaker that contained sodium hydroxide and zinc powder. after they were rinsed in water the were put under the flame as they turned into a gold colour.

English: Reading books

In English, we are reading around five books and to write down one fact from each book we had read.
the books I had read are, Street Style Skateboarding, cool football facts (American), Kieran Reads, and go Fiji go!

Facts:
1. Street style skateboarding has been around since the 1950s.
2. Teams that play outside football have 48 footballs for each game
3. Keiran reads were born in Auckland, on the 26th of October 1985.
4. Cyclone Winston smashed Fiji with full force around 6:30 PM
5. more than 90 million people watch the NFL super bowl on Tv each year.

Skateboarding is fun. It can also be ecofriendly

Art reflection: Lino print

In art overall, I believe I did pretty good at drawing up the bird the saddleback and
tracing it onto the bit of lino. The result of things printing was a bit off on the second
and third times. It wasn't too bad. It was ok with the results of them. Hopefully,
in semester 2 I can do better in art. And be more creative.

Science: Acid Rain

In science, we are doing an experiment on acid rain. Acid rain makes chemical weathering happen more quickly. buildings and statues that are made from rock can be damaged as a result. Acid rain forms when fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas are burned, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide escape into the air.

Why do we care about it?
Because it can damage the environment, and kill the livings things that live there. Plants, animals, water life, etc. It can also break down limestone, stones, and statues. It makes the water more acidic and kills off the water life that lives there.

Trees do bear some blame for acid rain | New Scientist

What we used:
Petri dish
Weigh boat
Blue litmus paper
Bromothymol blue
Universal indicator
Leaf
Apple piece
Calcium carbonate

Method:
1. set up Petri dish
*Add a few drops of water to these.
2. add 1 spatula of sodium sulfate to weigh
- take starting photo.
3. Add 5 drops of sulfuric acid and quickly put lid on.
4. Watch and take photos

Science: netrallsatinon

Today in science we are doing an experiment about neutralization. A Universal indicator - shows if acid or base. the colour shows us whether its an acid or a base. Blue, green, and red. (PH Scale) the acid we are using is hydrochloric acid and the base we are using today is called sodium hydroxide. An acid has a ph scale of 0-6 is the opposite of a base, which are sour. And a base is has a PH scale of 7-14. Lastly is a neutral area on the PH scale which is green in between the acidic side a the base side.

A chemical reaction occurs when you mix and acid and base together. the base cancels out the effect of the acid. this reaction is called a neutralisation reaction because a neutral solution is made up if you add around the right amount of acid and base together.

What is Neutralisation? - Twinkl Teaching Wiki
Equipment: a test tube. test tube rack, sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, dropper or a dropper bottle, universal indicator solution.

Instructions:
1 add 2ml (2cm ish) of NACH into a test tube.
2 2 drops of universal indicator.
3 add drops of HCI until you reach a green colour.

Creative Writing - Piece 2 - The other me

Submission 2 - Freewriting

The other me

I don't live anywhere in particular due to me previously running away. The orphanage was
messed up. Out of fear that If I return they will hate me. And that's one of the things that
I am afraid of the most. I wander the streets alone. Hiding in the crowds as I have recently
discovered this feeling of fear. Sometimes I wished that It didn't exist. I’ve already messed
up too many times. But there is another reason I don't want to return and need to find out
the truth about the huge gauge scared marks on my neck. I can only remember being
at the orphanage since I was five but I can’t remember anything before that. I need to
know why. Why was I left in that orphanage with no recollection of who I originally
was. And why I had lost the ability to talk and also my broken emotions.

“Move out of the way!” c r a c k. As light flickered before my eyes as I hit the ground
hard it had felt like my whole head had split open. As I began to hear static like on the
TVs who didn't have a connection it rang in my ears non-stop. It felt like the world was
shaking.  I could no longer move. I didn't know what to do to make the horrible sound
stop. As pitch darkness hit my view. It seemed like I had lost who I was. Who am I again?
It seemed like I had asked this question before.

Creative Writing - Piece 1 - You… at first sight

(Note: there may be mistakes and many errors in this piece of writing because it hasn't been edited)

You… at first sight (u are the murderer.)

Today is the day I start my 2nd week of school. I usually got ready, skipped breakfast
and headed to school but today seemed to be different. The streets were more chatter
than usual and less busy… I lived alone so I had no one to praise me or to tell me not
to eat. I walked to school and I listened to the people around me talking to give me
something to do with my time. they did you hear there is that killer somewhere in this
town that everyone talks about.” one whispered in a panicky tone.

“Are you seriously going to believe what people say?” the other added. I carried on
walking, yawning. As I carried on making my way towards school. The entrance
was tall with an old looking feel to it. “The same old plain old school” I murmured to
myself. I entered the grounds and onto the cracked tiled path. I entered the class.
With the same old rickety wooden floorboards and the tiny single desks. The single
glazed windows and an outdated chalkboard and front desk where the teacher sits.
Luckily I wasn't late today like it would even matter to me. I have nothing to walk towards
so I don’t have a future life of luxury. Working at fast food places is good enough to pay
for the house rent.

“Today we have a new student joining us,” the teacher sighed. He was slim tall with
pale skin and dark black hair. And with dark rings under his eyes. He kind of seemed
a bit familiar to me. Oh, wait don't tell me…As I busted out laughing. As his eyes instantly
shifted to me petrified as did everyone else's in the room. It had looked like he was about
to flee when he had recognized me. I could see the fear in his eyes. “Could you quiet it down.”
the teacher added sighing. “I-its yy-ou.” he yelped as he shakily pointed at me.
“Y-you killed my parents!” he yelled. I grimly smiled at him. “Now's not the time to be
joking around. How about you sit down next to him?” the teacher pestered in an obnoxious tone.
“Come on take a seat take a seat already….” as I wavered to the desk next to me.
He slowly walked over as he slowly pulled the chair out trembling. As he sat down as
he looked away from me. “Shhhh, you shouldn't joke about death
otherwise you will be next...” I whispered. Grimly smiling at him chuckling a bit.
